A shipwreck found off the coast of Kenya may have been connected to Vasco da Gama, the Portuguese navigator who sailed around Africa to reach India in the late 1400s and early 1500s. The wreckage was discovered near the city of Malindi in 2013.

Archaeologists think they have identified the ship that took Vasco da Gama on his final journey into the Indian Ocean in the 16th century.

A shipwreck, discovered in 2013 by underwater archaeologist Caesar Bita, is now thought to be a Portuguese vessel from one of Vasco da Gama’s voyages — possibly the São Jorge. If confirmed, it could be a tangible link to one of the most transformative eras in maritime history.
