SALEM, Ore. (KATU) — Oregon Gov. Tina Kotek held a press conference Monday morning to lay out her budget priorities for the 2025-2027 biennium. The governor said her biggest priority would be homelessness, behavioral health, and children and youth.

Tina Kotek wants the state to spend more than $2 billion on homelessness and housing and send a record $11.4 billion to public schools as part of a budget focused on maintaining existing programs with little cash to spare for new initiatives.

Gov. Tina Kotek doubled down Monday on her calls to devote more state money to reduce Oregon’s homelessness and housing crises, bolster mental health care and improve outcomes for children, priority areas she’s flagged repeatedly during her first two years in office.

Much of the governor's proposal represents maintained levels of funding for housing and homelessness, but new investments are earmarked for schools and youth.

Gov. Tina Kotek said Monday she will recommend the Oregon Legislature pass a $39.3 billion budget that directs millions toward housing, homelessness, behavioral health and education and represents a $4.7 billion more in total spending from the current two-year budget.

Now nearly halfway through her first term, Kotek had vowed on her first day in office to add 36,000 housing units per year.
