Romania’s mainstream political parties appeared on course to retain control of the country’s parliament, exit polls suggested after a general election on Sunday, despite big gains by nationalist far-right groups.

Despite the center-left victory, the strong showing of the far right is significant ahead of the presidency vote on Dec. 8.

The first exit polls after Romaina’s December 1 parliamentary elections show that the governing Social Democrats (PSD) are first with 26%, followed by the far-right Alliance for the Union of Romanians (AUR) with 19%.

With 99% of the votes counted in Romania’s parliamentary elections, the Social Democratic Party (PSD), led by Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu, has secured the largest share of the vote with 23%. The Alliance for the Union of Romanians (AUR) follows in second place with 18%,
